It grows mainly in Southeast Asia, southwest India and other tropical areas such as Puerto Rico and Florida, where the tree has been introduced. The fruit of the mangosteen is sweet and tangy, juicy, somewhat fibrous, with fluid-filled vesicles (like the flesh of citrus fruits), with an inedible, deep reddish-purple colored rind (exocarp) when ripe. The growth of the trees is retarded if the temperature is below 20 C (68 F). The ideal temperature range for growing and producing fruits is 25-35 C (77-95 F) with a relative humidity over 80%.
